Christmas Garlands Showcasing the Wonderful Spirit of the Season
There are several Christmas decorations that have become a staple décor during the holiday seasons; one of them is Christmas garlands. Just like any other décor, garlands have had a long history. They have been around for thousands of years and used to represent various things during its popularity. In America, the tradition of garland decorating came about when the European immigrants settled in. Garland season or making was done right after the harvest season. Some of the more common vegetation that was used back them included, pine, spruce, and cedar trees. It wasn’t a problem to obtain vegetation since most of the settlers lived around forests. The whole garland making practice was something so common that on any given night, these settlers could create around forty yards of garland.
When the 1800’s came, it set off a whole new trend by providing new materials to use in the garland. New designs came out and the ropes were decorated with hemlock, mountain laurel, holly, cedar blue berries, myrtle, as well as princess pine. During this time, most homes and establishments decorated their stores with these beautiful ropes in one form or another.
Today, with the development of technology, people are now capable of creating beautiful holiday garlands without further endangering nature. Some of the best Christmas garlands you can find, ironically, are the artificial ones. Plastic holly and evergreen were among the most realistic looking plastic pieces used in the garland during the 1900’s. However, now, it’s hard to even tell which pieces are real and which ones are fake because of the refined manufacturing process. From Christmas trees, wreaths, and Christmas garlands, each one is reproduced with its own unique flair. It’s hard to even believe that they’re made of plastic.
Traditional and artificial Christmas garlands have become a symbol of elegance and tradition. Unlike other Christmas décor, the garland is probably one of the most flexible pieces of decoration you can have especially now that they are available artificially. They are now made to last for years to come.
